Icy weather continues for South East Australia

It wasn't as bad as predicted but South East Australia experienced some of its coldest weather in decades on Sunday.

Dubbed by the media as the Antarctic vortex, strong winds and snowfall hit the states of Victoria and New South Wales (NSW).

Even normally sunny Queensland experienced frosts in some areas, with snow reportedly falling within 20 km of the border with NSW.

And more unusually cold weather is due this week.

Bureau of Meteorology NSW Regional Director Barry Hanstrum said the conditions were associated with a series of cold fronts that moved through the states.

Severe weather warnings are in place for Victoria and NSW, and icy conditions have closed some major roads, including parts of the Great Western Highway.

A low pressure system that caused the cold fronts is expected to last for much of the week ahead

Alpine regions and ski resorts saw good snow fall at the weekend with a light dusting also experienced in the Central Tablelands region of NSW.
