WASHINGTON – One person has died in Maryland in severe storms that have swept through the Northeast, causing Amtrak delays and other problems.
The man may have struck a branch or a tree as he drove, said Pete Piringer, chief spokesperson for Montgomery County, Md., Fire and Rescue. A downed tree and a power pole were involved in the collision, Piringer said.
The violent storms and severe weather affected Amtrak service, although the transportation agency announced that service along the Northeast corridor had been restored after an earlier suspension of service Tuesday evening due to severe weather.
The weather had delayed service between Washington and Philadelphia as well as on the Philadelphia to Harrisburg route, Amtrak said on Twitter.
The restoration of service was announced in a later tweet, although Amtrak cautioned passengers should expect "residual delays."
